Systems Administrator (Ubuntu Linux) - Ottawa Linux/OSS Job Postings

Position Overview
We are looking for a Systems Administrator who can provide day to day systems support for both in-house and cross-border infrastructure. This individual would be responsible for the provisioning, installation, operation and maintenance of systems hardware and software as well as ensuring that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values with a heavy focus on configuration management. Responsibilities also include assisting with technical issues during the planning phase of our projects and providing operational support in executing, testing, and rolling-out the solutions. The System Administrator will report directly to our Systems Manager who will provide both work and mentorship.

Skills and Qualities
Are you comfortable with ‘aptitude’ and ‘apt-get’ and have you maintained servers running either Debian or Ubuntu Linux? Do you know bash scripting and your way around the Linux filesystem? Do you have the ability to design and implement complex technical solutions to meet high-level requirements?

Required Experience : Minimum 2 years Linux system administration experience

Responsibilities
Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes.
Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media.
Provide Tier II/other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
Repair and recover from hardware or software failures while coordinating and communicating with impacted constituencies.
Update operating systems on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities.
Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures and perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
Support development and engineering in software deployments, troubleshooting and problem-solving.
The individual will have a great deal of autonomy, and is expected to manage their time effectively.
The position requires a self-starting, creative, adaptive person who is able to think through projects from start to finish.
Candidates should be comfortable working with a remote team and take constructive feedback from other team members.

Technical Requirements:
Strong knowledge of shell scripting and Linux systems, including but not limited to Ubuntu
Experience with system installation and configuration, printing systems, fundamentals of security, and third-party software installations
Knowledge of infrastructure management and automation systems, ideally Ansible
Experience with Database Administration, including Postgres, CouchDB
Ability to design and implement new solutions based on high-level requirements
Experience supporting the following: Server operating systems / configurations: Ubuntu Linux in a large scale environment, knowledge of Linux Hardware / Software Raid, TCP/IP networks with DNS, DHCP, SMTP, FTP, CIFS, NFS, NTP, Virtual Environments,

Additional Considerations:
Experience working on support teams and/or cross-border teams.
Programming experience in C++ and other related low level languages.
Knowledge of network protocols and system monitoring/graphing systems

Prerequisites:
University or college degree, with a technical major, such as engineering or computer science.
Strong Linux environment background
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Minimum 2 years experience a Systems Administration position
Strong analytical, evaluative and problem-solving skills
Demonstrate desire to learn and utilize new technologies

Compensation
65-75K, depending on experience.

Hours
Full-time - Flexible hours, on-call in evenings and weekends. (Telecommuting options available.)
