Chuck's short answer is generally correct but could use some explanation.
Postfix can be configured so that all mail is kept locally, delivered to
Internet addresses via another server (smart-host), or delivered to
Internet addresses directly. Home users generally want option 1 or 2.
Rob if you want the alerts sent to your gmail address you probably want
to configure Postfix in a sattelite configuration similar to the one
described in the article linked below. Although I would set the listen
address to 127.0.0.1, and set the Postmaster option to your gmail address.

Ignore the Install and configure options. It assumes you want to run a
mail server to receive email from the Internet.
Email routing is incredibly flexible. If there is something else you
hand in mind for you email alerts post to the list. I don't run postfix
but lots of people do and should be able to help you out.
