Thanks to all those who have offered helpful advice.

I have come to the conclusion that the spike took out the router even
though the modem remained intact as I simply cannot get the router to
work even though the modem is OK. Hence, right now, my wife has to come
in and use my system to send and receive her e-mails!
I will be purchasing a new router later today and hope that that fixes
the problem!
