Thus spake Bruce Keats (brucekeats at hotmail.com) [27/05/08 13:14]:
: I made the mistake or purchasing a cheap wireless router. I have had nothing but problems with this unit and a quick check on the internet seems confirm that others are having similar problems. I am now in the market for a new wireless router that supports cable or DSL, is relatively easy to setup, supports at least B and G, at least 4 100M LAN ports and should have at least a good range.
:
: Ones that look interesting are:
: D-Link DI-724GU
: Linksys WRT310N, WRT110, WRT330N
: Netgear WNR3500
:
: Anyone have any experience with either of these? Any others I should have a look at?
A friend of mine turned me on to Mikrotik about six months back:

Mikrotik is actually the OS, and it runs on RouterBoard hardware:

Specifically, there's a local reseller in Ottawa, from whom I bought mine:
<http://www.xagyl.com/>
It takes a bit to get going, is a little pricier, and you'll need a separate
hub, but they're remarkably reliable and stable, and I've had nothing but
good luck with mine. It runs a modified Linux variant, and has two separate
UIs: one CLI, one a Windows app (that runs under Wine just fine).
Yes, you *do* need to put it together yourself, which means you'll need to
get your own wireless card and antenna (both of which are sold by Xagyl).
If this is too daunting, I've been hearing from some friends that D-Link
stuff works great when it works, but breaks hard when it breaks.
