Yes, thanks, I removed the extra optical drive, and the actual PCI card with the 
HDDs connected to it, and SLAX booted up; I'm expecting that the others would be 
good too. I guess there's something about the hardware, or perhaps the hardware 
plus its "bios" (if that's the right word for the firmware that runs on bootup) 
that tricks Linux into thinking there's a HDD there, but it wouldn't run because 
I didn't load the appropriate image/driver.

To be honest, I've fixed my problem in a different way now, but it's good to 
understand this better; thanks for the help.

What's in the back of my mind now, is, whether gparted (the live CD) is going to 
work on this computer... but that's a problem for another day!
