[oclug] Filesystem not found

So I've got this box I was having trouble putting windoze on, so I needed to get
in and rename/delete some stuff, and I tried to boot it with a live CD (simply
MEPIS, DSL, and SLAX). All three bootable linux's that I tried gave the same
error: filesystem not found. Slax offered me the unhelpful but poignant "we
should never get here".

Does anyone know an obvious reason why this would happen?

Background: a replacement motherboard in an old system. DDR RAM, two IDE DVD
burners on the lone IDE port, two 250Gb IDE HDD's on a PCI RAID card (because
I'm now out of IDE ports!). Can't think what else might be relevant. Obviously,
it starts booting from the CD, but fails later. Mobo is built for SATA, but no
SATA drives connected. All three CD's (distributions) are a year or two old, at
least.

Meanwhile, I'm off to find out how to make a bootable USB flash drive, I know it
can be done.
