Hi Phil,
I am resorting to trying an install off my original XP disk. I wanted to try
the new quickinstall disk since it has all the drivers and updates, etc
slipstreamed in, but if this installation works, then I'll just spend the
time and update it all. I'd love to have the new disk work since any future
reinstall would be much faster... as well as to satisfy my own curiosity and
stubbornness.
I've got the latest Promise Fasttrak 376 drivers but XP doesn't copy them
from the floppy. Googling reveals it's a known issue with no real
resolution. The driver that's slipstreamed into the install disk works as
far as letting me see and format the disk and even get files copied to it,
but when it makes the final reboot after installation is complete, I get a
BSoD with a 7b error (which indicates that it can't find the driver).
I tried mounting the registry on the new installation from my current
installation and moving the relevant bits and pieces over, but that only half
works - the disk becomes recognized, but the RAID controller does not. Sigh.
Even imaging the drive didn't work since I'd made the original drive a
"dynamic disk" and it becomes unrecognizable after the imaging is complete.
If I weren't already bald, I would be by now!
Cheers!
Jon
Just a note: I fought just as much with this box when I installed Linux on it
a few years ago. Never again will I buy a PC with a nVidia chipset or a
Promise controller. One-off junk, IMO, that works poorly with any OS.
