[oclug] OpenOffice 2.4 problems

Yesterday I downloaded OpenOffice 2.4 and followed the install
instructions but everything still came up 2.3. Then I went in and, after
issuing a find bash command as root, I systematically removed EVERYTHING
connected with OpenOffice except the tar for 2.4 which I stashed away in
a special directory.

I then untarred 2.4 and went through the install but it fails and tells
me that 2.4 is already installed but I've looked and looked and ti's
nowhere to be seen. What HAVE I done wrong? Now I can't even get back to
2.3!!!! I hate the thought of re-installing Fedora 8 as there must be
some 300 or more updates, but if that's the only resource left to me
then I guess I'll have to grin and bear it.

Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried importing an odt file into
Abiword : it imported OK, but there' s not a lot I can do with the
file's images.

Any suggestions would be MOST welcome.
