Well all I can say is this. Plug in the cable to the putter and hit the hot 
sync button either on the cable or on the palm. Then change to root and do a 
$dmesg > dmesg.txt
Review that file and almost at the bottom you should see something about visor 
module attached to tty0 or/and tty1
Then set a symbolic llink to ttyn from /dev/pilot and the set the permissions 
accordingly for /dev/pilot. 

Now run kpilot and see what happens.
