It's the plain snd-intel8x0 driver that I was using to begin with.
After fiddling with various driver settings for a couple of hours as
per the docs and a search all over the Internet I decided to try other
drivers that were supposedly compatible replacements including the
snd-intel8x0m.  At midnight last night I sent out my request for
more info. This morning, I resumed my search and discovered that what
works is the i810_audio driver.

I thought perhaps that some BIOS changes were required because the
computer displays a message something to the effect that to use Unix
the BIOS needs to be configured differently for some reason. That
turned out not to be the case for Linux.
