Thanks Brad, you pointed me in the right direction! There were a couple 
of errors, some missing cryllic fonts and a non-existent wacom 
stylus/tablet thingy (heavens knows how they got there) which I 
commented out; but while I was editing, I noticed that the logfile had 
announced that it was choosing the lower resolution screen, and it was 
first in the list. I had a default colour depth, but not a default 
resolution (if such a thing exists) and so I guess it chose the first 
one. (I don't even know why the highest resolution was second in the 
list, possibly I had blindly copied someone else's blog posting.) 
Anyway, I put the resolutions in size order, and now it works nicely 
even on the login screen.
