The problem turned out to be some very obsolete NVidia drivers.
OpenSUSE's automatic NVidia driver installation system seems to be broken,
so it wasn't actually doing anything every time I ran it to "update" the
video card drivers. Now running perfectly fine at 1920x1200 after
manually installing the latest NVidia drivers and updating the X11
configuration. I'm glad I tried the update before running off to spend
$150 on a new card.
