I  Checked on other machines  and user accounts and they are OK.

A bit more googling, quoting the error led me to 

Look under "Tools>Advanced>Validation>OCSP". Use the default, "Do not use OCSP 
for certificate validation". I don't know what it is, but it causes the 8057 
error code.

Which solved the big worry.  I still have the verisign class 3 issue.
