The patent free FLAC, Free Lossles Audio Codec, is excellent. It is
overkill for portable players. I have ripped most of my CDs into FLAC
files using abcde. On average albums take about 350MB of space. The
big advantage I see with FLAC is that I can easily transcode all of my
music into the favored format of the day.
