So, I noticed that GTEC Week Open Workshops have some attention toward
Linux. It's probably way over my head at this point, but I thought
some might be interested.

I ripped this info from
http://www.gtecweek.com/ottawa2005/english/open_seminars_and_workshops/workshops.php.

Enjoy,
Justin

On Demand Government: Linux in the Public Sector

Jim Elliott, Advocate, Strategic Growth Businesses, IBM Canada Ltd.

The Government On-Line initiative is the Government of Canada's
project to provide information and services on the Internet. IBM and
the Government of Canada share a vision of the future (the on demand
business model) and this vision can only become a reality in a world
in which there are open standards. There continues to be a growing
acceptance of Linux in the public sector over the past year. Jim will
delve into the specific benefits of Linux to the public sector, and
discuss the tremendous growth of Linux in governments in Canada and
around the world as a direct result of these benefits.

11:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Linux and IBM

Jim Elliott, Advocate, Strategic Growth Businesses, IBM Canada Ltd.

One of the great strengths of Linux is that it is available for many
different servers, including several available from IBM. Among these
are the Intel EM64T and Itanium, the AMD Opteron, the IBM POWER and
the IBM zSeries (mainframe) architectures. While many IT professionals
are familiar with Linux on Intel x86 systems, the knowledge of Linux
on other platforms is not as wide-spread. Jim will provide an overview
of Linux on these various server products with a description of their
respective strengths. Also provided will be a review of Linux usage at
IBM and IBM middleware for Linux.

1:15 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Services for a Successful Linux Implementation

Mike Diplock, National Principal, Technology Adoption -
Linux/Middleware, IBM Global Services, IBM Canada Ltd.
Acceptance of Linux by the marketplace is rapidly moving forward. In a
relatively short time, Linux has gained credibility and is being
deployed in mission-critical areas like high performance computing
clusters, database servers, and application servers. As Linux
continues to move into these key business areas, IBM is committed to
providing the same level of support normally associated with
enterprise computing environments. IBM Global Services offers the
industry's most comprehensive portfolio of Linux consultative and
support offerings, from planning and design, to implementation and
technical support.

2:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Achieving Cost and eGovernment Delivery Advantages with IBM Software and Linux

Fred Logan, WW Linux Program Director, Public Sector, Strategic Growth
Businesses, IBM Corporation

Rachelle Park, Linux Software Sales Specialist, IBM Canada Ltd.

Today's businesses require systems and processes that deliver
world-class capabilities. Solutions running on Linux can deliver what
you need... from transaction systems, data management, messaging and
e-mail to integrated enterprise management. This session will cover
how IBM Software running on Linux is helping Public Sector
organizations to create cost effective enterprise level eGovernment
infrastructures.

3:15 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Linux on the Desktop

Jim Elliott, Advocate, Strategic Growth Businesses, IBM Canada Ltd.

Linux in a client environment is seeing rapid growth around the world.
While today Linux clients are commonly used for kiosks, point-of-sale,
thin clients, and engineering workstations, Linux as a general purpose
desktop is seeing increasing usage. Jim will provide an overview of
Linux on the desktop and focus on the emerging use of Linux as an
office desktop including such applications as IBM Workplace Client
Technologies, Novell Linux Desktop, Red Hat Desktop, and
OpenOffice.org.
