There was concern originally about using the Java platform as part of 
the office suite.  Java was required for the database integration and 
some wizard dialog boxes.  Some folks were unhappy about the Java 
requirement because Java wasn't free (in the freedom sense) enough for 
them.  Fortunately, the other features of the suite were operational 
without Java and since the release, the need for the Java platform was 
removed by using gcj to precompile the Java code into native executable 
code.
