When I've setup X servers, I've found significant performance
improvements after compiling a custom kernel and stripping out as much
of the generic stuff that I can. While I have never compiled a kernel
for powerPC, I'm sure you'll see a similiar improvement. Also, I've
found the fancy 3d screensavers show the performance limits quite
easily. Note that I have to review the screensaver point again soon as
I rarely use runlevel 5 and there have no doubt been some improvements
in the last year or two.

hmm... also,
I've heard that the ati drivers for X are a bit of a pain to install.
Maybe just the radeon driver, but I'm not sure about the rage 128 pro.

Good luck!
