[oclug] Problem reading part of filesystem

Hello,
when I got home tonight I noticed that I was unable
to get a directory listing of a folder through Samba.

So, I logged into my server and when I try to
get a directory listing I get the following error:
ls: /home/pub: Input/output error

Every other folder in my home directory is ok.
ls /home/james
public_html

This is what the entry for that hard drive looks
like in fstab:
/dev/hde1 /home ext2 defaults 0 2

When I mount the hard drive I get the following
message:
Mar 13 22:43:11 www3 kernel: EXT2-fs warning: mounting
unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

I had a problem similar to this (maybe different but
I can't exactly remember it was almsot two years ago)
and when I ran e2fsck it essentially erased the
hard drive. So, I'm wondering what my options are
here to get back all my data. Is running e2fsck
my only option?

I don't get any other errors or messages on bootup
or when I mount the hard drive. I had to reboot
because the system actually locked up on me
when I initially was trying to find out what was
wrong.

thx,
james
