I have exactly the same configuration you describe. This incoming mail in
fact is directed to Sympatico but the outbound mail goes through Rogers.
Works OK. I have the reply address as Sympatico.ca. I'm able to send
messages to anyone. Look at the headers in this message and see if it
helps. I can give you my server setup but it is nothing fancy. I pop off
sympatico and my outbound SMTP is a long Rogers name:
smtp.slnt.phub.net.cable.rogers.com that requires authentication.
One day I may drop Sympatico but right now I'm not sure which way I'll go.
Hope this helps.

Subject: [oclug] symatico <> rogers mail help request
Greets;
Was wondering if anyone knows the solution to the following. While
tested on windows the following is all replicatable on linux/kmail.
Description;
recently moved a friend off sympatico to rogers.
wife of friends likes msn stuff so retained a full sympatico (premium)
subscription was retained
email accounts on sympatico and rogers are fully functional.
broadband supplier is rogers.
Problem;
When ever I use the sympatico ID and send out mail via rogers smtp and
authenticate with the correct rogers credentials the mail does not make
it to sympatico and no error messages. Any other sudo ID used and send
out via rogers makes it to its intended destination as I can pop all the
various accounts. Only when sending out mail as ID ( Name:
xxxxx at sympatico.ca) and authenticating with the appropriate rogers smtp
credentials (remember broadband supplier is rogers) does the mail not
make it to the designated sympatico account
final examples:
example 1;
ID: xxxxx at sympatico.ca
smtp: rogers
authentiction: as required by rogers as valid account exists
pop; sympatico....does not make it.??
example 2;
ID: xxxx at anything_else.com
smtp: rogers
authentication: as required
pop: anthing_else ....mail is present.
the only thing I can conclude is that rogers is blocking sympatico ID's
based on email addressess or sympatico is blocking rogers smtp servers
which I doubt. Tech support of course at both ends, sympatico and
rogers, is less then stellar to sort this out.
Any clues would be appreciated.
