Guess DNS really is just an arbitrary-depth system, with an agreed-
upon Internet-wide authority managing the higher layers.

Yes.  $ORIGIN and $TTL are nice.  I especially like how bind defaults
$ORIGIN to the zone in question, such that I can use a single
'generic' zonefile for a lot of identical zones.
