Thanks for all the help on this question as well as the other one.

I did manage to get things working and there don't seem to be any problems.  
Then again, if I had problems I'm not sure I'd be able to recognise it.  
Anyway, I managed to get the server to issue names in the '.' zone.  I found 
a copy of the O'Reilly "DNS and Bind" which helped a bit.  The most 
interesting section of the book was part that discusses the 
abbreviations/short-cuts in the zone files.  The short cuts appear to make 
it very easy to move names from one zone to another.  I guess that's why the 
abbreviations/short-cuts were created in the first place.
