Sorry Jeff, didn't send off my reply to you.

I thought of installing an OS on the JumpDrive and using it to boot into
either machine to get/transfer files. I might have to use a boot floppy
if any of the computers can't boot from a USB drive.

I was worried that there might be some software on the drive which was
necessary for the functioning of the drive and that software might be
wiped out if I did anything to the drive.

Jean-Francois Messier's reply indicated that he had successfully done
this on a JumpDrive Secure (the same model as mine if a bit smaller) so
I've been reassured.
