When you power on the computer, you'll usually see the press [whatever] 
for setup.  Press this and look for:

Boot Sector Virus Protection

If this is enabled, writes to the boot sector of the disk are inhibited, 
and you will not be able to update the MBR on the disk.  Try disabling 
this setting (if set) and doing a fix MBR.

On the motherboard in front of me, it is in Boot->Security->Boot sector 
virus protection.
