I have some official Ubuntu[1] CD's that were mailed to me by the Ubuntu
Project. Ubuntu is a user-friendly, desktop-oriented release of the
latest Debian offerings. It looks quite promising (I even heard one
person refer to it as a "FC-killer" ;-)

There is a regular install CD, and there is also a 'Live CD' included
that runs off the CD-ROM drive (similar to the Knoppix idea). This can
be handy for testing your hardware ahead of time to make sure everything
works.

Ubuntu installs with a GNOME desktop environment by default, but can be
easily customized to run a lighter Window Manager (e.g. xfce,
windowmaker, icewm, etc.) as well.

If you are interested, email me off-list.
