linux. Given the _average_ skill level of the user base, linux support
would be a nightmare although Mandrake and rp-pppoe is a step in the right
direction. Even on supported os's there are problems. Given the very
small Mac user base, support is problematic simply because of lack of day
to day familiarity on part of the techs. NT and 2K are similarily
affected. All the training in the world does not replace dealing with the
same issues many times a day. As far a training goes, there are a
significant number of techs from all isps who have never seen a command
line...... 'nuff said. As far as support goes for isp's in general, I
believe the bottom line is the least common denominator member, anybody
else and the isp loses money. Like someone else mentioned the ideal
customer is one who never calls support and never uses the service.
As far as one or two or even a hundred members leaving because they use an
non-mainstream os, no big isp is really going to give a damn. They would
cost more to support _simply by having them call the desk_ than they are
worth in revenues. (Industry standards quoted to me were $1 a minute for
isp support, sorry can't back it up). Same goes for any business. Try
buying clothing or shoes in odd sizes, or 2 eggs for example.
Not that I agree with this business model but it is understandable. I
would think an isp would rather set someone up on rp and have them never
call back.
Regardless of what os is supported by what isp a good tech will try to
point a caller to a solution rather than spout "Not Supported!" I believe
that's called being professional.
