The 8139.o driver was buggy as a beehive for kernel releases 2.2.14 and
lower and has been superceded by the 8139too.o module. it's at:

if you don't want to upgrade the kernel, you'll probably need jeff garzik's
compatability layer, found at

http://gtf.org/garzik/drivers/kcompat24/
