Well, if WPA doesn't decrease speed or reliability, I may try that.
Otherwise, the plain lack of a DHCP server should be enough to suggest
it's not a public network. :)

I trust my VPN software.  I know that multiple layers are better than
one, but at this point, WEP is doing absolutely nothing except to
visibly flag my network as 'intended to be private' and keep people
from accidentally associating.
