here is a possible hack. I have no idea if it will work.

Back in the dark ages we used gpm to use the mouse on the text consoles.
Gpm also had a repeat feature to work with X. Use gpm's "repeat" feature
to access the touchpad. When you want to use the touchpad fire up gpmd.
You need to reconfigure X to read /dev/gpmdata (??) and configure
gpmd.conf properly. I don't have gpm installed but IIRC the manpage
describes how to setup X.
