[oclug] hard drive problem

I just installed a new larger hard drive, initially setting it up as a slave
drive. After much trial and error, I managed to copy my existing partitions
to larger partitions on the new drive. I now have two hard disks with
identical configurations except that the partitions are all larger on the new
drive. I then made the new drive the master and changed the old drive to
slave. Using my SuSE boot cd, I then booted the new Linux partition and
re-installed grub. So far so good.
Now for the problems. If I remove the slave (old) drive my bios doesn't
recognize the new drive. If I re-install the slave, the bios recognizes the
new drive as the master and the old one as the slave, exactly as I expected.
Despite the fact the grub points to an XP partition on my new drive, XP
insists on booting from the slave (old) drive. If I hide the XP partition on
the slave drive, grub loads XP from the new drive but XP then quits and
reboots because it can't find some program whose name I forget.
Does anyone have any idea what MS has done to my system? When my old hard
drive dies will I be left with a non-working system?
I know, I know this may seem off topic, but I use Linux 95% of the time, only
rebooting into Windows when I want to use a webcam which doesn't work under
Linux to talk to and see my grand-children.
