You should now be in the appropriate frame of mind to read
http://pepper.idge.net/disaster.html
Times change, of course. XClock now takes 4.7MB instead of the quoted 656k.
But that's OK. I don't run xclock. Instead I run
/usr/lib/gnome-panel/clock-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=36
which takes up a measly 14.7MB.
$ ldd `which xclock` |wc
18 72 973
$ ldd /usr/lib/gnome-panel/clock-applet |wc
55 220 3277
Thank you GNOME for making the X-windows disaster seem like small potatoes!

the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those
conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse
to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince
himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep
he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception." -- Mark Twain
