Check your screensavers. I've found on occasion a given screensavers
will freeze systems when powersave modes kick in, unpredictably so if
you're using the default "randomize" screensaver. The Gnome ones are
different than KDE, so you'll have to experiment to see which ones are
causing problems.
Power management in general on laptops can be problematic; tred lightly. :-)
