Since you've already made an apt-get comment I'll assume you are using
debian. add:
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ unstable main
to your sources.list . The site contains mplayer and a few other
niceties.
I believe installing mplayer should automagically set it up in your
browser (It did for me (currently watching a preview for Battlefield
Baseball using FireFox 0.8, latest mplayer from nerim to prove it to
myself) , though YMMV).
