[oclug] unresponsive system when using the cdrom

Whenever I open a program that reads the cdrom (e.g. XMMS, KsCD,
Grip), my system becomes unresponsive.  For example, if I move the
mouse, it takes about 5 seconds for the cursor to move then it freezes
for another 5 seconds.  This only happens when I try to read cd's
(audio or data). If I use XMMS to play internet radio or oggs, then
everything's fine.  This is happening with Knoppix 3.4.  Does anyone
have any ideas?
