For the last several months on my PC I've been relying on a launcher
utility named keylaunch and a light-weight window manager named Oroborus
from oroborus.org. It is quite hot IMHO because it has no graphics that
I'll ever get bored of... and I can keep my hands on the keyboard.
I use a quick script that I wrote to shade the root window according to
sunlight: http://store3.tripod.com/linux/background_sunlight.txt . You
can use your own favourite graphics. :-)
RSVP,
Anthony
