After I added 8 MB RAM to my old 486 Thinkpad 360SC I was able to
install debian 3.0. I installed it after six floppies(rescue, root and
4 driver disks) were used then went to network installing. I have
learned the use of Apt. I have the base system installed. Next I am
trying to install X using tasksel only selecting laptop systems and
tex. So far anything more with tasksel has bombed for known and unknown
reasons. Tex would be one tool I want to have as well as tex I would
like to have R installed. I have someone's working web published XF86
config file for this model laptop. I would like X on this old 486.
On both my AMD 850 MHz computer and the thinkpad I can get the
"configure the network" step of the install. I can install the base
system on both of them.
I am not spending any time repairing my fedora machine right now. I
would rather repair X than reinstall because I had actually started to
do some work using this system if only downloading palm programming
stuff. I don't really like fedora but hey its free and seems to work
until a recent update. Now X won't start. Everything was fine on this
system for about two months.
other wise I am using WinXP on a Thinkpad T30 and my eMac for work and
school.
Peter Timusk, B.Math, just trying to stay linear.
