[oclug] how do I set the default screen sync for debian woody?

My monitor only works well at 1280x1024 and 60Hz

I tried modifying /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 but it did not change anything.

        Identifier      "Generic Monitor"

       Option          "DPMS"

Any suggestions?
