Sorry for the distribution specific issue, but this can pop up really
suddenly and bite you if you're using Mandrake 9.2.
If you're doing an update to KDE or GNOME, and you loose your KDE or
GNOME menus - and the ability to do anything about it - there is a
potentially really easy fix. I haven't had the time to thoroughly
investigate the cause of this yet.
The fix is, simply boot from the install CD, and run through an update
rather than an install. The process took about a minute for me, and it
restored the default menus. Some customization might get lost, but at
least you get back to a reasonable starting point - no swearing,
sweating, lost documents, or smashing of mice and keyboards required.
