[oclug] aspell of death

Anybody using aspell on html files with RH9?

It works fine on text files, but if I feed it an html file
it drags the whole system down into the mud trying to run. (an Athlon
2500 w/512meg of ram)   
I don't think it ever completes - I've never let it run more than three
or four minutes - but that was a 6 line file....
It works fine on my eMac at work using the same commands and the same
files so it's something to do with my setup here.
I downloaded a newer version, but got into a real big pile of dependency
problems including gaim and Evolution.  I'd be days downloading and
installing I think.

Suggestions?
