Bob,
It's more likely that your MTA is just not locked down in terms of
relaying. If you do not need it at all, turn it off. If you do need it for
your own mail, check out the docs for it (e.g. sendmail or qmail or whatever
you may be using) to see how to turn off relaying.
If you have other machines (i.e. Windows boxes) on your network, you
might also want to scan those to make sure they are sending any massive
amounts of spam out via some 'virus' as well.
