This is very true. I was doing an initial BBS implementation for
a school board in the 80's and I had to provide support as well later
on, which then became volunteer work, as their budgets were then empty.

If you're interested in doing something in a sustainable, long-term
manner, it might be a good idea to approach a charity or nonprofit
organization in an area you're interested in and offer to help them
migrate from their Microsoft-dependant software. Every dollar not spent
on software means one more dollar that group can put towards their
programs.
I don't recommend doing this if you're not prepared to stick with it,
though, as beginning a partial migration and then bailing on it will not
only reflect poorly on you, but on the Linux and Open Source communities
in general.
