Sorry for the delayed response, I just 'discovered' this thread in my
mailbox.
I recall getting notices on Tux about this Gmane thing. It was a
'negative opt-out' type of deal i.e. "we're going ahead and archiving
your stuff to a newsgroup without asking your permission; if you want
out of this arrangement then let us know".
I recall being rather incensed at the time that anyone would take such
action without asking first, and thus by-passing appropriate discussions
(such as this thread, for instance, or Board discussions of potential
user impact, etc.).
In any case, I recall taking some kind of action to block Gmane as best
I could, so that may account for the 'arrested' population you mention
above.
My apologies if this creates yet another tempest in a teapot, but I'm
personally rather uncomfortable with the idea of 3rd parties harvesting
our mailing list without OCLUG's permission, and an opportunity to
discuss it first.
Oh, and I have no idea who's idea it was to subscribe us to Gmane
without asking -- I wonder if they have the guts to fess up? :-)
Have Fun with GNU/Linux,
Raymond
