The /etc/logrotate.d/mgetty file had this to say:

/var/log/mgetty.log.tty* {
        nocompress
        missingok
}

So, every log that was made, was itself rotated, over and over and over.
Now, why it created the 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.2.1, etc, etc filenames,
I have no idea.. probably some little idiosyncrasy of logrotate.
