[oclug] NIS vs. local users during outage

OCLUGers...

I have a setup at home where my account's home directory is NFS-mounted,
and the account is served via NIS. The root user is local to each box.

Now, while I thought this would permit me to login as root during an
NIS/NFS outage, this is not the case. It looks like using NIS with PAM,
there's a huge delay with the login, and it typically fails with a
timeout.

Does anyone know a way to set this up so that local users are still
useable during an outage?

Thanks,
Mike
