[oclug] Wireless

I wanted to say that I purchased a USR322410 wireless card and left it in my
PCMCIA slot and lo and behold Mandrake 9.2 found it and the installation was
seamless. It was not detected in RedHat so it was a blessing for this
newbie. Even though it is only 11Mbps it meets my needs. I also have 3
access point which come with native Linux drivers from the USR Site. (See
the link http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=2450
They are new in the box but I do not believe there is any support at the
present time since they are discontinued products. All you would have to do
to make them functional is update the firmware .
Cheers,
Maxx

Funny. Yesterday on the CFL website they had a page saying how Sun
was going to provide a live, interactive website (Java n stuff) during the
Grey Cup. And today I see some lame message about technical difficulties,
and absolutely NO mention of Sun anywhere on the website that I can see.

The interactive website is http://www.cfl.ca, and it's working fine. The
service you're talking about (with the lame message) will only work during
a game. Otherwise, it wouldn't be live play by play.

So, why then do I not see this traffic on other hosts? If it were truly a
big ol' virus/worm, its targets would be ISP-independent, yes? And
larger, older and more established ISPs should see a larger attack coming
their way, yes? So, either other ISPs have some kind of filter in place,
or this attack is only directed at me/my ISP which I find hard to believe.

Keep in mind that this particular worm is winding down. Also keep in mind
that it tends to trigger every so often. I often _still_ get hits from
last year's popular worm (which one, eh? ;) every Sunday morning. Timing
may be a factor in your failure to notice this on other ISPs.

Some ISPs do indeed block such things, some do not. Some have very
proactive blocking after such attacks start.

If your ISP hasn't filtered for traffic from W32/Welchia or W32/Nachi (or
W32/Blast for that matter) this could be the reason you're experiencing
this. Judging from your log files, the traffic pattern seems to be
consistent with that type of traffic. It does not appear to be an attack,
but a probe.

Are you comparing the time difference of the update for the
workstation runnning debian with the update for the
RedHat-Oracle server ?
I do hope that a testing phase exist for the redhat server.
With added comments on the update:
- is it critical
- is it invasive(does enough testing has been done).
solving one problem and creating two others.

May be the sensible thing to do,
- does the kernel has the PIE option,
- does glibc is involve,
- is prelink libraries used.
What version of the RedHat distribution, are you talking about.

distro of choice
- for what kind of user.
- for doing what
- what are you expecting ?
I can understand/feel why some users may like it.
Motivation is "they like controlling the machine".

Have you experience update to critical packages that were not fast
enough, which ones.

I haven't checked in a while but I used to see them at some
Futureshops and Staples and I believe also at the computer books
store on O'Connor. But if I remember correctly they always
were a version or two behind.

Among the others already mentioned, CompuSmart, CompuCenter, and you can
order directly from MandrakeStore. They had a distribution contractor in
Montreal as late as last October(02) who might still represent them.

SSH pfing is so useful to me that I don't know where to begin

So, is it just a matter of shutting down incoming ping requests?
