[oclug] I switched RH 7.3 from LPRng to CUPS/foomatic, now can't print. Help!

I switched my Red Hat 7.3 system from LPRng to CUPS
(recommended for HP DeskJet 970Cse support). My HP DeskJet 520 used to
work fine with LPRng.

Now, all my print requests get aborted! Grovelling the logs shows me
(in /var/log/cups/error_log):

OK, this tells me that foomatic-rip exited with a status of 3.

I turned on foomatic debugging (by putting "debug: 1" in
/etc/foomatic/filter.conf, and extracted this from
/tmp/foomatic-rip.log :

So, something is causing Ghostscript to die.
