I haven't tried plugging in my GF's camera yet.. perhaps it'll work
without me touching a thing, but I suspect the recognition of the device
will stop at the USB driver level. I'll have to search a bit to see what
I'll need to install to read pics out of a camera (Canon Powershot A70).
I guess part of the point he's making is that manufacturers are only now
starting to provide Linux support. Perhaps one day you'll be able to walk
into Best Buy, pick up a camera, stick the enclosed CD into your drive and
install the camera software onto your Linux machine. That day isn't here.

Neither do I. Perhaps it should be taken as a wake-up call rather than
criticized as heresy. It _is_ okay to call a spade a spade after all.
