I never quite understood this, and can never for the life of me, remember
those 'shortcuts'.  I don't 'get' how intuitive it is to assume that 'l' =
right.

I think the old internet quote that "Nothing is intuitive, it's all
learned" is quite apt.  I could probably learn those shortcuts if I spent
the effort to learn them, write 'em down or do something to pound them
into my head, but to me, it's more 'intuitive' to use the keys that have
arrows on them to indicate cursor direction.
