For some strange reason, when I first encountered python syntax I was
immediately reminded of coding FORTRAN on punch cards where certain
elements of the programme had to begin at certain column numbers.

So do I. However, human nature being what it is (ingrained stupidity),
they tend to want to grow and grow things in an attempt to turn once
useful tools into the "be all and the end all" of all apps. Perl leaps
to mind immediately. As the manpage for`bash' admits, the first bug it
recognizes is that it's "too big and too slow."
