I can recommend Peanut Linux - I've used it on a 166 Mhz machine and superficially it
appears great, ie all the obvious bells and whistles of a full modern distro, and looks great.
(no SSH though, you'll need to install that yourself if you need it).
I think it uses about 320 Megs.
To speed it up if necessary, you could then add one of the other light window managers.
