Not so you'd notice them much actually. I'm currently using 2.4.21 and
I haven't noticed much of a difference. The general impression overall
that it is faster, but it still suffers when loaded.

The new scheduler is the much heard of `real-time' scheduler and from
what I've heard is supposed to be the "cat's meow." I've attempted to
install several 2.5.xx kernels, the latest being 2.5.73. They compile
alright, but I have yet to get one to run successfully. It seems to
load alright, but because all the old boot-up messages have been
removed, I can't tell where it hangs up. I know that it runs at all
because of disk activity for about a minute, but then nothing. No
screen messages appear and the keyboard is locked. I've never really
had the time to go deeper into it, just running it out of curiosity.
